Oedipus Rex Essay- Summary of the Play

Here is a summary of the whole play on which your Oedipus Rex essay is based. It is the tragic story of King Oedipus of Thebes, who kills his father and marries his mother. In his effort to save Thebes from plague, he comes to know from the oracle of Apollo that the plague was the punishment for the murder of King Laius, his predecessor. Oedipus approaches seer Tiresias who discloses that Oedipus is responsible for the king’s murder and that Oedipus has married his mother as well. Considering the whole event as a conspiracy to dethrone him, Oedipus banishes his brother-in-law Creon.

However, the whole mystery is unraveled soon after. Jocasta reveals that there was a prophesy that King Laius would be killed by his own son. At the same time, Oedipus reveals to Jocasta how he consulted the oracle of Apollo when he heard from a drunken man that he was not the real son of Polybus of Corinth and Merope. When he consulted the oracle of Apollo, he was told that he would kill his father and marry his mother. This was the reason why he left for Thebes and, by chance, killed a man in a chariot on the way. As the confusion and fear grow, a messenger appears with the news of Polybus’s death.  The messenger reveals that Oediups is not Polybus’s real son but an adopted son. On threatening, he further reveals that the adopted son’s real mother was Jocasta and that the person in chariot whom Oedipus killed was Laius.  Realizing the tragedy, Jocasta hangs herself while Oedipus puts out his own eyes. Creon comes to power and Oedipus is exiled.
